Is Thin Back In? Boudoir Myths vs Facts From a Nashville Boudoir Photographer

Is thin back in? If you have opened TikTok lately, it sure feels like it. SkinnyTok is trending again, fashion week had almost no curvy models, and every other headline is about a weight loss shot. Here is my answer after almost 13 years photographing women in Nashville: trends change every season, and your photos should not wait on any of them.

What got me writing was a new study covered by Earth.com. Researchers showed 323 women short TikTok clips. The thin-ideal videos made them feel worse, and the body-positive ones lifted their mood. Every single body video, good or bad, had them thinking about their own bodies. Same, ladies. Same.

So let me clear up a few myths I hear in my makeup chair every week.

Myth: I need to lose 10 pounds before I book

Fact: This is the number one thing women tell me, and it is the number one reason they wait years. The 10 pounds is a moving target. I have never had a client look at her reveal and say she wished she had waited.

Even the fashion world is a mess on this one. ELLE Canada reported that only 0.3 percent of models on the fall/winter 2026/2027 runways were plus size, a historic low. If the runway is your measuring stick, nobody wins. Including the models.

Myth: Boudoir is for women who already love their bodies

Fact: Most of my clients walk in nervous. Many of them tell me they almost cancelled. What changes is what they see afterward. One client wrote this on her questionnaire, and I think about it a lot:

Now when I’m having a day where I am being extra critical about my body, I stop and think back to the photos and this shoot. I am quickly reminded that I am beautiful no matter how the clothes fit.

Myth: Only thin bodies photograph well

Fact: Light and posing photograph well. I pose every body on purpose: angles, arches, where your hands go, where your chin goes. Hair and makeup are done for you, and our closet is full of pieces you would never grab off a rack. The camera does not care about the size on the tag.

Myth: Scrolling body positive videos is enough

Fact: Those videos are nice, and the study says they really do lift your mood in the moment. But a 20 second clip of a stranger is not the same as seeing yourself. In 2024 British Vogue’s editor told the BBC that Ozempic seemed to be pushing fashion back toward skinny. You cannot control what the feed serves you. You can have photos of you, on your wall or in an album, that remind you who you are on the days the feed gets loud.

Myth: Thin trends are for twenty-somethings, so they do not touch me

Fact: Oh, they touch all of us. My clients are mostly 30 to 65, and plenty of them grew up on the first round of heroin chic in the 90s. Now they are watching their daughters scroll the second round. The women in my studio are teachers, nurses, moms, grandmothers and business owners, and the feed talks to every one of them.

Here is what I see over and over. The woman who booked at her heaviest and the woman who booked after losing 70 pounds cry at the exact same moment in the reveal. It is never about the number. It is about finally seeing herself the way the people who love her already do.

FAQ

Do I need to lose weight before my Nashville boudoir session?

No. Book for the body you have today. Posing, light and the right lingerie do the work, and we have a full client closet for you to try on. Most women tell me afterward they are glad they did not wait.

What if I hate how I look in photos?

Almost every woman who books with me says that first. I guide every pose, I show you the back of the camera during the session, and you see everything at your reveal before you choose a single image.

Ready to skip the 10 pounds?

My studio serves Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Read the booking guide to see how a session works, then pick your date online. Come as you are. I will handle the rest.
